Scottish Smallpipes

* * * * * * * * *

Northern Ireland has a wonderful history of Piping, both Highland Pipes & Uilleann Pipes, and now the Scottish Smallpipes are starting to become popular here too.

Champion Piper, Robert Watt, was one of the first to bring them over here, and now local Piper, Alan Wade plays a set.

Both men purchased their pipes from a Scottish maker who lives in Angus, Ian Kinnear

The good news is Ian Kinnear is coming to CDF/06 to teach a course on these delightful members of the Bagpipe family.

However, if you simply can't wait till next June, to take Ian's course at CDF, then there are details below of two courses Ian is running this year, in Scotland.

The first is in August, over two days at the “Piping Live” Festival in Glasgow (10 hours tuition over two days), and the second is in October, a weekend residential course in Glen Clova, Angus.

These will give you an idea of what you can expect from Ian's Smallpipes course at CDF/06. However, please note that as the CDF is just a Traditional Music Festival & not a dedicated Piping Course, the cost of tuition will be less than the prices quoted for Ian's courses.

Ian Kinnear “Piping Live” Scottish Smallpipes Course

Wednesday 10th & Thursday 11th August 2005

Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow

Cost: £80

BELLOWS TECHNIQUE SOUND TUNING HARMONIES REED-MAKING

Ian is delighted to bring his established “Glen Clova” course to the “Piping Live” Festival
2005. The course is suitable for a range of abilities with the emphasis on SOUND, as well
as tuning - playing in tune with other players and staying in tune, harmony playing and
playing with other instruments. The course will run over two days incorporating 10 hours
tuition.

In order to maintain a good sounding set of smallpipes it is essential to understand how to
adjust your reeds. To this end it is useful to understand how the reeds are constructed.
Included in Ian’s courses are reed-making demonstrations. These are useful whether or not
you fancy having a go at making reeds yourself or just want to better understand how they
work.

The exact content will depend on the ability and mix of participants. Ian hopes to
incorporate some individual tuition as well as group working including harmonies, tips on
session playing etc. In order to maximise the tuition, an audio tape and music will be sent
to each participant in advance.

Ian is well-placed to offer a full teaching programme as he has been playing pipes for over
25 years and making pipes for 12 years. He has played in pipe bands, with smallpipe
ensembles and a folk band. As a pipe maker he has all the knowledge required of pipe
maintenance and the all important reed making and maintenance.

Glen Clova, Angus

Cost: £180

The Clova course uses the facilities of Glen Clova Hotel and bunkhouse. Accommodation is in
shared bunkhouse rooms (ensuite) with 4 per room. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are all
provided in the bunkhouse kitchen, whilst evening meals are provided in the Climber’s Bar
of the main hotel.

During the smallpipe course there is tuition to suit the needs of each participant, with
music (both written and on audio tape) having been sent out in advance. We keep the numbers
of this course quite small to ensure the best compliment of tutor time to participant
ratio. One of the most popular aspects of the tuition has proven to be the harmony
workshops. These are adapted to maximise player’s ability and make sure everyone can take
part. On the Saturday Ian invites local traditional musicians up to the Climber’s bar for a
session. Course participants can either join in the session or just enjoy listening.

Ian is delighted to have Lee Moore assist him with the course. Lee is a well respected
player as well as a tutor. He teaches at the innovative ALP programme in Edinburgh. You can
hear Lee playing Ian’s smallpipes with his band “Pipedown” on their latest recording “The
First Measure”.

Since Ian started making pipes, back in 1993, & quickly established himself as a maker of first class musical instruments. Ian Kinnear Smallpipes are available in the keys of A, Bb, C or D.  A and D.

They are most commonly used for playing with other traditional instruments, including the Hammered Dulcimer. In the musical line up of local group 'Scad the Beggars' Alan Wade's Scottish Smallpipes feature very nicely with Hammered Dulcimer, Fiddle, Harp & Guitar.

I'm delighted to say that we had two local Scottish Smallpipes players at CDF/05, namely Alan Wade & Ian Miller & I'm sure they will both be taking full advantage of Ian's visit to CDF06.
