Jenny Coxon picked up this beauty on a recent trip to India.

A Chinese Yangqin

Jenny Coxon sent me these two interesting photos of the Chinese Yangqin.

The one above is one, on its first outing. The Chinese delegation unveiled it at the CWA congress in Appenzell 2003.

It was developed as a result of the Chinese players seeing the Hungarian Cimbaloms.

This is Stan Ang, a Yangqin player from Singapore who visited Nonsuch in January 2004.

Note the bamboo hammers - not curled at the ends!

A Chinese [Yang-qin] Hammered Dulcimer

Nat took this photo of a Chinese Dulcimer when George Monger called in to see him, in Larne.

This was a huge Chinese dulcimer.

This one was a lot smaller, about the size of Nat's own 'Alec Magee' Dulcimer, but with ChessMan bridges.

Another Chinese Yangqin

Thanks to Brandy Davis for this photograph of Christine Smith's Yang-qin.

Christine kindly brought this over to CDF05 for us all to examine at our leasure.

I'm not sure which Chinese Tartan the rug is though?

Chinese Wood Se

Speaking of Chinese Dulcimers here are some beautiful photographs of the Chinese Se, which were sent to me by my friend Sophia Dong.

If you are interested in the wonderful instruments & music of China you should visit her website cgb

Unearthed from Hougudui, Gushi, the Se is the earliest stringed instrument recorded in Chinese history and six wood Se instruments were excavated from the tomb of Hougudui.

The Se has a length of 1.9 metres, has 19 strings and is made of one whole Chinese parasol wood.

The body is decorated with ten coiled snake design in relief.

The earliest record of Ancient Se is Warring States Period (about 3000 years ago).

Sophia and her group are an ancient Chinese ensemble of Zhengzhou city, China and play mainly ancient Chinese music.

Interestingly, their musical instruments are the same as thousands of years ago, such as Ancient Qin, Wood Se, Bronze Chime Bells, Bone Flute, Xun and so on. To see some amazing photographs of her group in action with their wonderful array of instruments check this out cgb

Their dulcet sounds bring forward thoughts of Chinese music from thousands of years ago and their beautiful costumes also copy finery of the time. All of these wonderful elements combined, are sure to leave a lasting impression on the memory of any audience.

If you are interested in Chinese ancient culture and music, and would like to see this group perform at your festival, they would be only too delighted to perform for you.

You can contact them through their website at cgb

Or you can E-mail Sophia at cgb
