Absent Friends Concert in aid of 'Marie Curie'

This Concert was held on Sunday 1st December 2002 in the Skerry Inn, Newtoncrommlin & these are a few photographs of the many musicians, singers, dancers and storytellers who came along on the night, to remember their musical friends.

Compere on the night was 'Seamus Richmond'.

The concert was in memory of some fine local musicians, who are sadly no longer with us.

May they rest in peace.

Mary Mulholland

Mary was known the length & breadth of the country, wherever good music was played, or sets were danced,

& she was always in demand, being a superb Piano player, & an excellent teacher.

Listen to Mary playing along with me on the Dusty Rhodes track on this site:

Alec Higgins

Alec travelled all over the countyside with his trusty Banjo, going wherever a session could be found, & he,

like Mary was one of the regular musicians who kept the Skerry Inn sessions going for many years.

Sam Stevenson

Sam was a founding member of the 'Derry & Antrim Fiddlers' & was not only a great Fiddle player,

but he also spent many years, repairing & making excellent Fiddles.

John Christie

John was a musical partner to Leslie Craig for many a long year, & with John on Fiddle & Leslie on the Box,

those two boys shared many musical exploits together.

These four wonderful musicians were stalwarts of the local scene, & all worked tirelessly in the area to promote Traditional Music.

A host of the finest Musicians, Singers & Storytellers, of all ages, and from all over the place, gathered to ensure that this was a night to remember.

The concert began at 5pm and ran on until midnight, when proceedings carried on in the downstairs bar till the wee small hours, a fitting tribute to these, sorely missed, musical friends.
